Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah Distributes Food Packs to Stranded Workers

Jeddah, 16 May 2018 - Consul General Edgar Badajos, together with Consul Rodney Jonas L. Sumague and Welfare Officer James Mendiola, visited today the camp of a major Saudi contracting company where around 70 male Filipino workers have been housed for the last couple of months while awaiting full settlement of their unpaid salaries and other benefits from the company. The Consulate Officials distributed food packs to the workers.

The company has fallen into dire financial straits recently, giving rise to a number of labor problems with its workers which include a substantial number of Filipino workers.

Consul General Badajos also updated the Filipino workers on the status of their repatriation and release of their unpaid salaries and benefits. Through coordination of the Consulate General with the company and the Philippine recruitment agency of the workers, plane tickets were issued to some of the workers. Twenty-five (25) workers are scheduled to be repatriated on 20 May and five (5) more on 21 and 22 May. The management of the company also issued an affidavit of undertaking indicating the company’s commitment to fully settle the monetary claims of the workers on a monthly installment basis starting August of this year until January 2019. END
