Philippine Consulate Joins “Festival Day”

at the American School of Jeddah

The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah participated in the annual “Festival Day” organized by the American International School of Jeddah (AISJ) here on 03 March 2016. Held at the school premises, the event was attended by more than 2,000 people who enjoyed an afternoon of food, dance and cultural performances.  Aside from the Philippines, there were 22 other Consulates, many international schools including Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan that participated in the festival that celebrates each other’s traditions.

The event saw various programs like Consulate “passport” stamping activity where the children had the opportunity to visit each country’s booth to learn about them, world bazaar that was divided into Asia, Africa, America and Middle East representing each nation’s special traditions and customs, food stalls with sumptuous cuisine from various countries, followed by cultural performances by the AISJ students, including a presentation of 30 different nationalities by students who came up the stage bearing their flags and dressed in their national costumes.

Our annual International Day is not only the biggest event of the year in terms of attendance, it is also a chance for us to celebrate our diversity…with 51 different nationalities represented,” said Mr. Monti Hallberg, Superintendent of the school.

At the Philippine booth, traditional food/delicacies were served to the attendees that include the crispy turon, pancit, puto and lumpia shanghai.  There were also displays of various Philippine handicraft, national costumes and rolls up bearing information on Philippine history, basic information, famous destinations, and interesting things about the country, for the students’ educational purposes. In addition, Philippine tourism was also promoted during the festival by distributing various brochures to the visitors, and the well-applauded Tinikling dance performance by the Knight Movers (KM), a homegrown Filipino teenage dance crew.
