Philippine films well received at Asian Film Festival
15 March 2016 – “Crazy Beautiful You,” a Filipino feature film was screened during the Philippine movie night at the residence of the Consul General of Indonesia on 04 March 2016. Diplomats, film lovers and other foreign nationals, including members of the Filipino community attended the screening.
The screening was part of the 9th Asian Film Festival 2016 organized by the Asian Consuls General Club (ACGC) consisting of 13 Asian countries namely Bangladesh, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
“Crazy Beautiful You,” starring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, was released in February 2015 and directed by Ms. Mae Czarina Cruz-Alviar. In the 113 minute romantic comedy-drama film, we are introduced to Jackie (Kathryn Bernardo), whose rebellious spirit forces her mother (Lorna Tolentino) to take her in a medical mission in Tarlac in hopes that she would change for the better. There, Jackie met a jolly lad named Kiko (Daniel Padilla), who made sure she gets all her tasks done. In the middle of his mission, he and Jackie discovered something crazy...and beautiful.
A short documentary titled “Organic Negros Occidental” was also shown prior to the screening of “Crazy Beautiful You.” Negros Occidental is considered the premier province in the Philippines when it comes to organic farming. With strong support from the provincial government, coupled with passionate stakeholders, the province’s initiatives on Organic Agriculture and are now on full blast.
In her speech, Consul General Imelda M. Panolong welcomed all distinguished guests and invitees and thanked them for their presence. She also expressed her special gratitude to the Consul General of Indonesia for hospitably hosting the screening of the Philippine film at his residence, and also acknowledged his effort as coordinator of the ACGC, who organized the film festival 2016. She also conveyed her appreciation to the Western Union for sponsoring the Philippine movie night.
The annual film festival provides the Philippine Consulate an opportunity to showcase Philippine cinemas while promoting its public and cultural diplomacy programs.
For this year, 11 films were screened during the nights of the Festival, majority of which were shown at the auditorium of the residence of the Consul General of Indonesia. It commenced on 25 February 2016 at the garden residence of the Consul General of Japan in conjunction with Japan’s movie screening. It formally ended on 11 March 2016, with the screening of an Indonesian film and the traditional Asian Food Festival. END
