PICPA Successfully Conducted 1st Inter-School Spelling Bee Contest
02 February 2016 – The Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants – Western Region Chapter (PICPAWR) successfully held its 1st Inter-School Spelling Bee Contest on 29 January 2016 at the Philippine Consulate General’s (PCG) Hall.
There were forty (40) contestants, all high school students composed of ten (10) representatives from each of the four (4) Philippine Curriculum schools based in Jeddah namely, Al Dura (Gems) International School, Bader International School (BID), Durat Al Sharq International School (DASIS) and the International Philippine School in Jeddah (IPSJ). The contest aimed to showcase the best and brightest high school students in the area of spelling. Vice Consul Rodney Jonas L. Sumague was invited to give an inspirational message, wherein he highlighted the relevance of the contest in imparting to the youth of today the importance of becoming competent in spelling in communication especially now that the correct spelling of words is not given much importance in multimedia. Vice Consul Sumague emphasized that the correct spelling is still important to avoid miscommunication. He expressed full support to the contest and expressed hope that it will be a regular event.
There were three rounds, elimination, semi-finals and championship round. Among the 40 spellers, only 10 spellers qualified and advanced to the championship finals round, namely Hannah Thea Conde, Yasmin Lara L. Calidro and Kirsten Destiny V. Gatigan from Gems; Melody S. Rubis, Polan AJ L. Palaypayon, Chloe Mari R. Caceres, Romelle Kimberly L. Amores and Myra A. Luczon of BIS, Noraniyah B. Marohom and Amira Rose M. Santos from IPSJ and DASIS respectively.
At the end of the contest, Melody S. Rubis, a Grade 8 student from Bader International School emerged as the champion while Hannah Thea C. Conde and Yasmin L. Calidro, both Grade 10 students from Gems, were declared as 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up, respectively. They received medal, trophies and cash prizes from PICPAWR. Gift vouchers and items were also awarded to the top ten finalists. According to PICPAWR, it will make the inter-school spelling bee contest a yearly activity. END.
