Fiesta activities, songs and indoor games, lured hundreds of OFWs to the Philippines Consulate in Jeddah to celebrate the Migrants Worker’s Day last 5 June 2015.
This year’s celebration was the first of its kind to have been held in the Consulate premises in Jeddah which included various fiesta-type activities, game booths, live acoustic band, indoor games such as table tennis, darts, chess, scrabbles and word factory, videoke singing competition, free photo booth and Chicken Adobo cooking challenge, among others.
The Migrant’s Day celebration, which was organized by POLO-OWWA Jeddah this year, in partnership with the various Filipino community organizations led by OFWCC, also offered various services to our OFWs including free Medical/Dental and Opthal Services, free massage therapy as well as government onsite services such as OWWA voluntary membership, SSS and PagIBIG facilities as well as Overseas Voting Registration.
The whole-day event kicked off with a grand opening ceremony in the morning that brought together the officers and staff of the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah led by Consul General Leo Tito L. Ausan, Jr., who did the ceremonial ribbon cutting, and assisted by Labor Attache Jainal Rasul, Jr. and Welfare officer Amelito Adel on behalf of POLO-OWWA in Jeddah. The activity continued with live acoustic band in the afternoon and culminated with a formal program in the evening for the reading of messages from DoLE Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz and OWWA Administrator Rebecca J. Calzado, followed by cultural dances, awarding of prizes for the various games, and cooking competition, and grand raffle bonanza.
A free-flowing bowls of Chicken Arrozcaldo, courtesy of POLO-OWWA and the MWFRC wards, were served to all the OFW participants, guests and visitors.
The affair offered a refreshing break for OFWs and their families in Jeddah considering that for the past two consecutive years, the Philippine Consulate was saddled with problems of overstaying and stranded OFWs at the “Tent cities”.
Leaders of the various Filipino community organizations expressed their appreciation to the Philippine Consulate and POLO-OWWA for successfully coming up with perya or fiesta-liked fun-filled celebration of the Migrant Workers’ Day. END.
