PHILIPPINE CONSULATE GENERAL IN JEDDAH RECOGNIZES
2020 HUWARANG OVERSEAS PAMILYANG PILIPINO AWARDEES
27 December 2020 – The Philippine Consulate General and the Office of the Social Welfare Attache in Jeddah feted outstanding Filipino Families in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia in an awarding ceremony for the 2020 Search for the Huwarang Overseas Pamilyang Pilipino Award (HOPPA) held on 23 December 2020 at the Refal Lounge-Jeddah.
Out of the ten (10) OFW Family nominees, the family of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Apolo was chosen as the 2020 Huwarang Overseas Pamilyang Pilipino. First Runner-up was the family of Mr. and Mrs. Alvaro Asperilla and the Second Runner-up was the family of Mr. and Mrs. Nabil Daknash.
The HOPPA, a joint project of Jeddah PCG and the Office of the Social Welfare Attache in Jeddah, under the leadership of Social Welfare Attache Annabel R. Oidem, aims to recognize and pay tribute to an OFW family in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia that has maintained strong family ties, demonstrated traditional Filipino values, and created a positive impact in the community where they live, local or overseas, in spite of the many challenges of living abroad. This year, the criteria included the family’s contribution in assisting fellow Filipinos during the COVID-19 pandemic that affected the Kingdom and many parts of the world.
Consul and Acting Head of Post Mary Jennifer Dingal, in her Inspirational Message, stressed the importance of strong family ties in coping with the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic, which put a toil physically, emotionally, and economically among members of the Filipino community. She underscored that untiring support from the family strongly nurtures resilience and positivity despite trying times-- all shown by this year’s HOPPA winners and nominees.
The 2020 HOPPA Board of Judges was composed of Ms. Sylvia S. Delos Santos, 2018 HOPPA Winner and Musical Director of Serenata, a non-profit performing group in Jeddah; Mr. Osmond B. Corpuz, legal researcher and scholar; and Mr. Paul Antiporda, financial and operations expert.
The program also launched the HOPPA Family Network, composed of all previous and future winners of the HOPPA, and the Psychosocial Support Group, which aims to provide peer counselling to members of the Filipino community in Jeddah. – END --
