Jeddah PCG joins Global countdown to the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world

Jeddah, 16 December 2019 – The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah (Jeddah PCG) held in the evening of 15 December a lantern-lighting ceremony to signal the start of the countdown to the worldwide celebration of the quincentennial of the first circumnavigation of the world in 2021.

The program, which was held at the Consulate grounds, featured a re-enactment of the Battle of Mactan with Post’s personnel playing the role of Lapu-Lapu and Magellan. The re-enactment was followed by a short video clip on Lapu-Lapu and the ceremonial lantern-lighting that signalled the start of the countdown to April 27, 2021, the 500th anniversary of the defeat by Lapu-Lapu of Magellan, and the culmination of the Philippines’ quincentennial celebrations.

In his message, Consul General Edgar Badajos said that the Consulate’s quincentenial celebration gives Lapu-Lapu his rightful place in Philippine history alongside the other national heroes. He likewise noted that the accidental discovery of the Philippines by Magellan led to the introduction of Christianity in the Philippines.

The Consulate’s quincentennial celebration was capped by the singing of personnel of “Bagani”, the quincentennial celebration theme song. – END -
